- The TTL or Time To Live of a DNS record is a suggestion to other DNS servers of how long to cache the given DNS record. Short TTLs mean your DNS server will be queried more often and longer TTLs mean your DNS server will be queried less often.
If you are planning a change in DNS and need other DNS servers to find out about the change sooner rather than later, it is helpful to drop the TTL temporarily during this change.
